  • It also does not matter which way round you say it: 7 × 4 and 4 × 7 are both 28. That halves how much there is to learn.

About times tables

Multiplication is repeated addition. Seven times three is seven added three times, and a times table is simply that written out for every multiplier in turn.

The single most useful thing to know while learning them is that order does not matter. Seven times four and four times seven are the same fact, so learning one gives you the other free. Across the whole twelve by twelve grid that removes almost half the work, and it is rarely pointed out early enough.

The tables also have patterns worth spotting rather than memorising blindly. The five times table alternates between ending in 5 and ending in 0. The nine times table has digits that always add to nine — 18, 27, 36, 45 — and the tens digit climbs while the units digit falls. The eleven times table up to nine simply repeats the digit.

Every answer in a number's table is a multiple of that number, and every one of them divides by it exactly. That is the link between times tables and division, and it is why fluency here makes long division and fractions much easier later.

The formula

n × 1, n × 2, n × 3 … each one n more than the last

Each row of a times table is the previous row plus the number itself. The seven times table goes 7, 14, 21, 28 — adding seven every time.

That is why counting on works when a fact will not come to mind. If you know 7 × 5 is 35, then 7 × 6 is 35 + 7 = 42, and 7 × 4 is 35 − 7 = 28. Working from a fact you are sure of is faster and more reliable than starting again from the top.

The other shortcut is that the order can be swapped. 7 × 12 is awkward to recall; 12 × 7 is often easier, and it is the same answer — 84. Anything in the table can be looked at whichever way round is easier.

Doubling covers more than it looks. The four times table is the two times table doubled, and the eight is the four doubled. So 8 × 7 can be reached as 2 × 7 = 14, doubled to 28, doubled to 56.

Does the order of multiplication matter?

No. 7 × 4 and 4 × 7 both give 28. This is worth knowing early, because it means learning one fact gives you the other and roughly halves how much there is to memorise.

Which times table is hardest?

Most people find seven the hardest, because it has fewest patterns to lean on. Sevens are usually the last table to become automatic, and counting on from a known fact is the practical way through it.

Is there a trick for the nine times table?

Two. The digits of every answer add up to nine: 18, 27, 36, 45. And 9 × n is always 10 × n minus n, so 9 × 7 is 70 − 7 = 63.

How do times tables help with division?

They are the same facts read backwards. Knowing 7 × 8 = 56 means knowing that 56 ÷ 7 = 8. Long division leans on this constantly, which is why it feels hard before the tables are secure.

How far should times tables be learned?

Up to twelve is the usual expectation in most school systems, and it is where this defaults to. Some go to ten and some to twenty; set it to whatever is being asked for.

What is a multiple?

Any number that appears in another number's times table. 21 is a multiple of 7 because 7 × 3 = 21, and it is also a multiple of 3.

How do I work out a table for a big number?

The same way — keep adding the number. Set the tool to any number up to a thousand and it will build the whole table, which is useful for checking a multiplication as much as for learning one.
