Age Calculator
Age counted the way people actually count it: a year passes on the anniversary, not after 365 days.

- Counted the way people do it: a full year passes on the anniversary, so someone born on 29 February has an age that only advances on a leap year if you are pedantic about it, and on 1 March if you are not.
- Months are counted as calendar months rather than as 30-day blocks, which is why the total months figure does not divide neatly into the total days.
About the age calculator
The convention almost everywhere is that you turn a year older on the anniversary of your birth. That sounds obvious and it is not the only system — traditional East Asian age reckoning counted everyone a year older at new year, so a baby born in December could be two years old in January. South Korea legally moved to the international system in 2023.
Counting in months and days is where it gets fiddly, because months are different lengths. Someone born on 31 January is a month older on 28 February in a normal year, and the number of days elapsed differs from the number in a month starting from 31 March. This uses calendar months rather than 30-day blocks, which is why the total months figure does not divide neatly into the total days.
Leap years are handled, so counting across February neither loses nor gains a day. Someone born on 29 February has a birthday that strictly only exists every four years, and the usual convention is to treat 1 March as the anniversary in other years — though some jurisdictions use 28 February for legal purposes.
The next birthday is shown alongside, because it is usually the other half of the question. If today is the birthday, it shows this year's date and zero days.
What it works out
- Age in years, months and days
- Totals in months, weeks, days and hours
- The next birthday and how far away it is
- Age on any date, not just today
The formula
Years = whole anniversaries passed Months and days = what is left over
Count the completed anniversaries first. Someone born on 15 June 1990 has had 36 birthdays by 21 August 2026, so they are 36.
Then the remainder, in calendar months and days. From 15 June 2026 to 21 August 2026 is two months and six days, so the full answer is 36 years, 2 months and 6 days.
The total in days is 13,216 — which is 1,888 weeks and a bit. Note that 13,216 divided by 365 is 36.2, not 36 and two months; the difference is leap days, of which there have been nine in that period.
Months are counted as calendar months rather than 30-day blocks, which is why the totals do not reconcile arithmetically. Both are correct; they are answering slightly different questions.
Leap years are accounted for throughout, so the day count is exact rather than approximate.

- Whole years completed. What "age" means in almost every country.
- Calendar months
- Real months of varying length, not 30-day blocks.

Questions
How do I calculate someone's exact age?
Count completed anniversaries for the years, then the calendar months and days since the last one. Born 15 June 1990, on 21 August 2026, that is 36 years, 2 months and 6 days.
Why does the day total not match years times 365?
Leap days. Thirty-six years contains nine of them, so the true day count is nine higher than a flat 365 a year would suggest.
How does a leap-year birthday work?
A 29 February birthday strictly occurs every four years. The usual convention is to celebrate on 1 March in other years, though some jurisdictions use 28 February for legal purposes such as coming of age.
Is age counted the same way everywhere?
Now, mostly. Traditional East Asian reckoning counted everyone a year older at new year, so a December baby could be two in January. South Korea moved to the international system in 2023.
Can I work out an age on a past or future date?
Yes — change the second date to whatever you need. It works for a date in the past as well as the future, which is useful for eligibility questions.
Why are months and days not just the day total divided up?
Because months vary in length. February to March is 28 days and July to August is 31, so a month is not a fixed quantity. Calendar months are what people mean when they say "two months old".
