Weight Converter

A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms by definition. The messy part is not the conversion — it is that "ton" means three different things.

  • Conversions use the defined factors rather than the rounded ones people memorise. An inch is exactly 25.4 millimetres by international agreement, not 25 and a bit, so these will not drift.
  • Every unit in the family is shown, not just the one you asked for, because the next question is usually a different one.

About weight conversion

The pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms since 1959, so kilograms and pounds convert without any error at all. Seventy kilograms is 154.32 pounds, and converting back returns exactly seventy.

The confusion is in tons. A short ton is 2,000 pounds and is what "ton" means in the United States. A long ton is 2,240 pounds and is the older British one. A tonne — sometimes written "metric ton" — is 1,000 kilograms, which is 2,204.6 pounds and sits between the two. All three are shown here for exactly that reason.

The gap matters at scale. A thousand short tons and a thousand long tons differ by 240,000 pounds — over a hundred tonnes — which is the sort of discrepancy that shows up in shipping contracts and commodity pricing.

Strictly, these are all masses rather than weights. Weight is a force and depends on gravity; mass does not. Nothing in everyday use turns on the distinction, but it is why a scale calibrated on Earth reads differently on the Moon while the object itself has not changed.

What it works out

  • Kilograms, grams, pounds and tonnes
  • Short tons and long tons, separately
  • Exact factors rather than rounded ones

The formula

Converted = Value × (kilograms per from-unit) ÷ (kilograms per to-unit)

Everything routes through kilograms. A pound is 0.45359237 kilograms, so 70 kilograms divided by that is 154.324 pounds.

The three tons are where care is needed. A short ton is 2,000 pounds (907.18 kg), a long ton is 2,240 pounds (1,016.05 kg), and a tonne is 1,000 kilograms (2,204.62 lb). They differ by up to twelve per cent.

Seventy kilograms is 0.0772 short tons, 0.0689 long tons and 0.07 tonnes. On a person that is trivia; on a shipment of a thousand units it is a large discrepancy in a contract.

A useful approximation: a kilogram is about 2.2 pounds, and a pound is about 454 grams. Both are close enough for cooking and shopping, and neither is exact.

Stones are not included, being effectively British-only. A stone is 14 pounds, so 70 kilograms is about 11 stone.

Questions

How many pounds is 70 kg?

154.32 pounds. The rough conversion of 2.2 pounds per kilogram gives 154, which is close enough for most purposes.

What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?

A tonne is 1,000 kilograms — 2,204.6 pounds. A short ton is 2,000 pounds and a long ton is 2,240. All three are called "ton" somewhere, which is why all three are listed separately here.

How many kg in a pound?

Exactly 0.45359237. It is a definition rather than a measurement, so it carries no error and the conversion reverses perfectly.

How do I convert kg to stone?

Convert to pounds and divide by 14. Seventy kilograms is 154.3 pounds, which is 11 stone 0.3 pounds. Stones are effectively British-only and are not listed here.

Is weight the same as mass?

Strictly no. Mass is how much matter there is; weight is the force gravity applies to it. Everything here is really mass, which is why a scale reads differently on the Moon while the object is unchanged.

How many grams in an ounce?

28.35. An ounce is a sixteenth of a pound, so it is 0.45359237 divided by 16, which comes to 28.3495 grams.
